Collection: Phlox Seeds

How to Germinate Phlox Seeds

1. Know the Type

  • Annual Phlox (Phlox drummondii) – No cold stratification needed.

  • Perennial Phlox (e.g., Phlox paniculata) – May benefit from cold stratification.

📦 Materials Needed

  • Seed tray or shallow pots

  • Seed starting mix (light and well-draining)

  • Spray bottle

  • Plastic dome or plastic wrap (optional)

🌡️ Step-by-Step Instructions

For Annual Phlox (No Stratification Needed):

  1. Fill a seed tray with moist seed starting mix.

  2. Sow seeds on the surface of the soil. Lightly press in — do not bury deeply — Phlox seeds need light to germinate.

  3. Mist lightly with water using a spray bottle.

  4. Cover with a humidity dome or plastic wrap to retain moisture.

  5. Place in a bright location (indirect light is fine) at a temperature of 65–70°F (18–21°C).

  6. Germination time: Usually 7–21 days.

  7. Once seedlings sprout, remove cover and provide bright light or grow lights.

  8. Transplant when seedlings have 2-3 sets of true leaves.

For Perennial Phlox (Cold Stratification Recommended):

  1. Sow seeds in a moist paper towel or moist seed starting mix.

  2. Place in a ziplock bag and refrigerate for 4–6 weeks (cold stratification).

  3. After stratification, plant on the soil surface as above and follow the rest of the steps for annuals.

💧 Watering & Care

  • Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.

  • Water from the bottom if possible to avoid disturbing the seeds.

☀️ After Germination

  • Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days.

  • Plant outdoors after danger of frost has passed in a sunny to partly shaded spot.
