How to Germinate Marigold Seeds

🌼 Type: Annual

⏳ Germination Time: 5–10 days

Common Types:

  • Tagetes erecta (African Marigold – taller, larger blooms)

  • Tagetes patula (French Marigold – compact, bushy plants)

📦 What You Need:

  • Marigold seeds

  • Seed-starting mix or light potting soil

  • Seed trays, pots, or garden bed

  • Spray bottle or gentle watering can

  • Plastic wrap or humidity dome (optional)

🌡️ Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Fill Trays or Pots

  • Use clean trays or pots with well-draining seed-starting mix.

  • Lightly moisten the soil before planting.

Step 2: Sow the Seeds

  • Plant seeds about ¼ inch (6 mm) deep.

  • Cover lightly with soil and press gently to make contact.

  • Space seeds at least 1 inch apart in trays.

Step 3: Moisture and Cover

  • Mist the soil gently or water from below.

  • Cover with plastic wrap or a humidity dome to retain moisture (optional but helpful).

Step 4: Provide Warmth and Light

  • Temperature: 70–75°F (21–24°C) for best germination.

  • Light: Marigold seeds don’t require light to germinate, but give them bright light once sprouted.

🌿 After Germination:

  • Remove any covering once seedlings emerge (5–10 days).

  • Move to a sunny window or grow light.

  • Water when the top of the soil feels dry — avoid overwatering.

🌞 Transplanting Outdoors:

  • Transplant when seedlings have 2–3 sets of true leaves and after the last frost.

  • Harden them off over 5–7 days.

  • Plant in full sun with well-draining soil.

  • Spacing:

    • French marigolds: 6–9 inches apart

    • African marigolds: 12–18 inches apart

✅ Bonus Tips:

  • Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms.

  • Marigolds deter aphids, mosquitoes, and nematodes, making them great for companion planting.
