'May Breeze' is a refined selection of woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata), chosen by plantsman Piet Oudolf for its star-like, pale blue-white flowers. It blooms in late spring above low mounds of foliage, reaching about 12 inches tall and wide, with a light fragrance. A graceful groundcover for shaded beds and woodland-style plantings.
Why choose our seeds?

How to grow May Breeze Woodland Phlox seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost, after cold stratification.
- Outdoors: Direct sow in late fall or early spring so winter cold naturally breaks dormancy.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining seed-starting mix
- Humidity dome or plastic wrap (to hold in moisture)
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Woodland phlox seed germinates best after cold, moist stratification: refrigerate seed in damp sand or a damp paper towel inside a sealed bag for 30-60 days before sowing.
- Sow on the surface and press gently into the mix; the seed needs light to germinate, so do not bury it.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Needs light to germinate; keep trays in bright shade or morning sun.
- Temperature: Around 65°F (18°C) after stratification.
- Humidity: Keep covered until germination to hold in moisture; remove once seedlings emerge.
Germination
- Germination may take several weeks and can be staggered; a second cold period can coax more seed to sprout.
- Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Transplanting
- Once seedlings have developed leafy shoots, transplant to a permanent spot in part to full shade.
- Plant in rich, moist, well-drained soil; a light mulch of fallen leaves is appreciated.
Care Tips
- Sun: Part shade to full shade; tolerates full sun only in cool climates.
- Water: Keep soil evenly moist; water during dry spells.
- Fertilizer: A light feeding in spring is plenty.
- Deadhead after flowering for tidier plants and to encourage a second flush.
Bloom Time:
Late spring into early summer, for about a month.
