Purple 'Laura' is a garden phlox (Phlox paniculata) grown for fragrant clusters of purple flowers with a white eye, blooming from July to September on tall stems. It suits the middle or back of sunny borders and makes a good cut flower. Please note: named phlox cultivars generally do not come true from seed, so seedlings may vary and may not exactly match the 'Laura' parent.
Why choose our seeds?
- Fragrant purple blooms with a contrasting white eye
- Long summer bloom season, July to September
- Tall border plant that also works as a cut flower
How to grow Purple 'Laura' Gaden Phlox seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors about 8 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Direct-sow in spring as soon as the soil can be worked.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Rich, moist, well-drained potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Cover seed with about 1/8 inch of fine soil — darkness is required for germination.
- Keep the soil evenly moist until seedlings emerge.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Darkness for germination; bright light once seedlings are up.
- Temperature: 60–65°F (16–18°C) for germination.
- Humidity: Evenly moist soil; do not let it dry out.
Germination
- Seedlings usually emerge in 5–10 days.
- Transplant carefully when the first true leaves appear; phlox dislikes root disturbance.
Transplanting
- Set out after the last frost.
- Space plants about 12 inches apart in rich, moist, well-drained soil.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun to part shade.
- Water: Water regularly; keep soil medium-moist and avoid wetting the foliage.
- Fertilizer: A spring feeding in average soil is enough.
- Give plants good air circulation to discourage powdery mildew; deadhead to extend bloom.
Bloom Time:
July to September. Seedlings of named cultivars may vary in color and form rather than matching 'Laura' exactly.
