How to Germinate Columbine Seeds (Aquilegia)

🌼 Type: Perennial

⏳ Germination Time: 21–30 days (sometimes faster after stratification)

📦 Supplies You’ll Need

  • Columbine seeds

  • Seed starting mix (light, well-draining)

  • Seed trays or small pots

  • Plastic wrap or humidity dome

  • Spray bottle

  • Refrigerator (for stratification)

❄️ Step 1: Cold Stratification (Highly Recommended)

Columbine seeds germinate best if cold-stratified for 3–4 weeks.

Option A – Paper Towel Method:

  1. Moisten a paper towel (not soaking wet).

  2. Sprinkle seeds on one half of the towel and fold.

  3. Place it in a ziplock bag and label it.

  4. Store in the refrigerator (not freezer) for 3–4 weeks.

Option B – Direct Soil Stratification:

  1. Sow seeds in a moist seed-starting mix in pots or trays.

  2. Cover loosely with plastic.

  3. Place trays in the fridge for 3–4 weeks.

🌤️ Step 2: Planting After Stratification

  1. If using the paper towel method, gently transfer seeds onto moist seed mix.

  2. Sow seeds on the surface or lightly cover with a very thin layer of soil – they need light to germinate.

  3. Mist lightly to settle seeds in place.

🌡️ Step 3: Germination Conditions

  • Temperature: 65–70°F (18–21°C)

  • Light: Bright indirect sunlight or grow light

  • Humidity: Cover with a humidity dome or plastic wrap until germinated

💧 Step 4: Watering

  • Keep soil evenly moist (not soggy).

  • Mist as needed to avoid disturbing seeds.

  • Once seedlings appear, remove the cover and keep them in good light.

🌿 Step 5: Transplanting

  • Transplant when seedlings have 2–3 sets of true leaves.

  • Harden off gradually before moving outdoors.

  • Best planted in partial shade to full sun with well-drained soil.

🕒 Tip: Fall Sowing Option

Columbine seeds can also be sown outdoors in fall, allowing natural winter chill to break dormancy.
