Aquilegia Earlybird Red Yellow is a first-year-flowering columbine with bold, nodding red bell-shaped blooms set off by buttery yellow centers and long, graceful spurs. The Earlybird series is bred for a controlled, well-mounded habit with relatively short stems, making tidy 9–11-inch plants for borders, rock gardens, and part-shade beds. Flowers are excellent for cutting.
Why choose our seeds?
- Red flowers with pale yellow centers — a striking two-tone combination
- Early, extended flowering window in the Earlybird series, often in the first year from an early sowing
- Compact, mounded 9–11-inch habit that suits containers and border fronts
How to grow Aquilegia Earlybird Red Yellow Columbine seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Sow directly in spring after the last frost, or in late fall for natural winter chilling.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface-sow or press seeds lightly into the soil — light aids germination, so do not bury them deeply.
- Columbine seed benefits from 3–4 weeks of cold, moist chilling before sowing (in the refrigerator, in a damp bag), which improves germination.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light; do not exclude light from the sowing surface.
- Temperature: 65–70°F (18–21°C) for germination.
- Humidity: Keep the surface evenly moist until seedlings emerge.
Germination
- Germination usually takes 21–30 days, and can be slow or uneven — be patient.
- Grow seedlings on in bright, cool conditions and plant out after frost.
Transplanting
- Set out after the last frost when seedlings have several true leaves.
- Space plants 10–12 inches apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun to partial shade; part shade is preferred in hot climates.
- Water: Keep soil evenly moist, especially while plants establish.
- Fertilizer: Light feeding in spring is enough; columbines are not heavy feeders.
- Deadhead spent flowers to extend bloom, or leave a few to self-sow.
Bloom Time:
Mid-spring to early summer.
