‘Nora Barlow’ is a classic columbine (Aquilegia vulgaris) with fully double, spurless, pompon-like blooms, typically in soft pink and white. Its airy, fern-like foliage looks good even when the plant is not in flower. A cottage-garden favorite for borders and cut flowers.
Why choose our seeds?
- Unusual fully double, spurless pompon blooms — unlike traditional spurred columbines
- Airy foliage and elegant stems, good for cottage borders and cutting
- Blooms late spring to early summer, generally from the second year
How to grow Nora Barlow Columbine seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors from February to June.
- Outdoors: Or direct sow outdoors from April to June, after the frost.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface sow on moist mix — do not cover; columbine seeds need light to germinate.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright, indirect light.
- Temperature: 59–68°F (15–20°C) — columbines prefer cool conditions.
Germination
- Expect germination in 2–4 weeks; it can be slow and irregular.
- Keep the mix consistently moist and do not discard the tray too early.
Transplanting
- Transplant while seedlings are still young and easy to handle — established columbines dislike root disturbance.
- Harden off for 7–10 days before planting out.
- Space plants 12 inches apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
- Water: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Fertilizer: Grows well in fertile soil; generally not a heavy feeder.
- Cut back tired foliage after flowering to encourage a fresh flush of leaves.
Bloom Time:
May–July, generally from the second year after sowing.
