- Blooms from midsummer into fall; good cut flower
- Compact, free-flowering plants for sunny borders
How to grow Yellow Echinacea seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Sow outdoors in late spring after the soil warms, or in autumn for natural cold stratification.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface-sow and press into the mix — echinacea seeds need light to germinate; cover with only the finest dusting of vermiculite.
- Cold-moist stratification for about 4 weeks in the refrigerator can speed and even out germination, though it is not required.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light; seedlings need strong light to grow stocky.
- Temperature: Around 70–75°F (21–24°C).
Germination
- Seedlings usually appear in 15–20 days.
- Pot on young plants and keep them in bright light until planting out.
Transplanting
- Plant out after the last frost.
- Harden off indoor-started plants for a week before planting out.
- Spacing: Space plants 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun in well-drained soil.
- Water: Keep the area weed-free and water during hot, dry spells.
- Fertilizer: Generally not a heavy feeder; compost worked into the planting soil is enough.
- Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering.
Bloom Time:
Blooms from midsummer into fall; plants may flower lightly the first year and fully from the second year on.
