White Four O’Clocks (Mirabilis jalapa) are fragrant white trumpet blooms that open in the late afternoon and close the next morning, giving off a sweet perfume in the evening garden. These bushy plants grow 2-3 feet tall and wide, blooming generously all summer into fall. Note: all parts of the plant are toxic; keep away from pets and children.
Why choose our seeds?
- Fragrant white trumpet blooms that open in late afternoon
- Bushy 2-3 foot plants; bloom all summer into fall
- Evening-perfumed flowers for patios and evening gardens
How to grow White Four O'Clocks seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Direct sow after all danger of frost, once the soil is warm.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Soak seeds overnight in water before sowing; scarifying with a light nick or sandpaper helps too.
- Sow about 1/4 inch deep and press down firmly so the mix covers the seed.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: At least 6 hours of sun per day for seedlings.
- Temperature: 65-75°F (18-24°C).
Germination
- Seedlings emerge in 7-14 days in warm, moist soil.
- Keep the soil evenly moist; do not let it dry out completely.
Transplanting
- Move out after the last frost; harden off for about a week first.
- Space plants 12-18 inches apart in fertile, well-drained soil.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun is ideal; plants tolerate part shade but grow lankier.
- Water: Keep soil moist but not waterlogged; established plants tolerate dry spells.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
- Deadhead to limit self-seeding — four o’clocks reseed readily and can spread. Plants are tender perennials in mild climates, grown as annuals elsewhere; after frost, tubers can be dug and stored for spring.
Bloom Time:
Summer through fall; fragrant trumpet blooms open in the late afternoon and close by morning.
