White Blazing Star is the white-flowered form of Liatris spicata, with tall spikes of fluffy white blooms that open from the top of the spike downward — the reverse of most flowers. It is a sturdy garden plant for sunny borders and the spikes make excellent cut flowers. The seed needs a cold stratification period, so plan ahead.
Why choose our seeds?
- Tall spikes of fluffy white blooms
- Unusual top-down flowering sequence
- Excellent cut flower
How to grow White Blazing Star seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Stratify first, then start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Or sow outdoors in fall and let winter cold stratify the seed naturally.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining seed-starting mix
- Humidity dome or clear plastic cover
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Cold stratify: mix seeds with damp sand or vermiculite in a sealed bag and refrigerate at 34-41°F / 1-5°C for 30-60 days.
- Then sow about 1/8 inch deep — barely cover the seeds — and keep evenly moist.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Light is not required for germination, but bright light helps once seedlings emerge.
- Temperature: 65-75°F (18-24°C) after stratification.
- Humidity: A humidity dome or plastic cover helps hold moisture; remove it at emergence.
Germination
- Germination is erratic — typically 20-45 days after stratification.
- Check stratified seed regularly; seedlings look grass-like at first.
Transplanting
- Transplant when seedlings have 2-3 sets of true leaves, spacing 8-12 inches apart.
- Harden off before planting out.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun.
- Water: Average water; keep evenly moist until established, then water during extended dry spells. Avoid waterlogged soil.
- Fertilizer: No special feeding required; too-rich soil is not helpful.
- Cut back by half after flowering to encourage a second flush.
Bloom Time:
Summer; plants grown from seed usually flower in their second year.
