White Balsam (Impatiens balsamina) is a pure white form of garden balsam with cheerful rose-like blooms packed along upright stems. A bushy annual growing 12-18 inches tall, it lights up shady borders and containers from summer through fall — no pre-treatment needed, and plants self-sow for next year.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Pure white rose-like blooms on upright stems
  • Bushy annual 12-18 inches tall; loves part shade
  • Blooms summer through fall; self-sows for next season

How to grow White Balsam seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow after the last frost, once nights are reliably warm.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Humidity dome or plastic wrap (to hold in moisture)
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow on the surface and press gently into the mix — balsam seeds need light to germinate, so do not bury them.
  • No pre-treatment is needed.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light from sowing onward; surface-sown seeds must stay uncovered.
  • Temperature: 65-70°F (18-21°C).
  • Humidity: Cover with a humidity dome or plastic wrap to hold in moisture; vent occasionally.

Germination

  • Seedlings emerge in 10-14 days in warm soil.
  • Keep the surface lightly moist until sprouts appear.

Transplanting

  • Move out after all frost danger has passed and seedlings are a few inches tall with several true leaves.
  • Space plants 8-12 inches apart in fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Harden off before transplanting.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Part shade is ideal; morning sun with afternoon shade keeps blooms coming.
  • Water: Water consistently; do not let the soil dry out between waterings.
  • Fertilizer: A slow-release balanced fertilizer keeps plants blooming all summer.
  • Pinch plants when about 4 inches tall to encourage branching; deadhead to prevent self-seeding, or leave a few pods for volunteer seedlings next year.

Bloom Time:

Summer through fall; plants bloom about 60-70 days from seed.
