- Blooms continuously from summer until frost
- Suited to beds, borders, containers, and part-shade spots
How to grow Violet Garden Balsam seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Direct sow outdoors after all risk of frost has passed and the soil is warm.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Clear dome or plastic wrap to hold humidity
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface-sow the seeds and press them gently into the mix — balsam seeds need light to germinate and must not be buried.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light; seedlings grow well in part shade to full sun.
- Temperature: Around 65–75°F (18–24°C).
Germination
- Seedlings usually appear in 7–15 days.
- Grow on in a bright spot; young plants transplant easily at almost any stage.
Transplanting
- Plant out after the last frost, once nights are reliably warm.
- Harden off indoor-started plants for a week before planting out.
- Spacing: Space plants 8–12 inches (20–30 cm) apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun to part shade; flowers best with at least a half day of sun.
- Water: Keep soil evenly moist — about an inch of water a week — but do not saturate the soil.
- Fertilizer: Mix compost into the soil before planting; avoid heavy nitrogen feeding, which favors leaves over flowers.
- Pinch the tips when plants are about 4 inches tall for bushier growth.
Bloom Time:
Flowers from summer until frost, roughly 10–12 weeks from sowing.
