How to grow Terracotta Eustoma Lisianthus seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost; lisianthus is slow from seed, so start early.
- Outdoors: Direct sowing outdoors is not recommended; the tiny seeds need controlled conditions.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Humidity dome or plastic wrap to hold moisture
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface-sow on moist, well-drained seed compost; press the tiny seeds in and do not cover, as light is needed for germination.
- A humidity dome helps keep the surface moist; remove it once seedlings appear.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: light is required for germination
- Temperature: 68-77°F (20-25°C); a heated propagator gives the best results
Germination
- Seeds sprout in about 10-15 days, sometimes up to three weeks.
- Seedlings grow slowly at first; keep them warm and bright.
Transplanting
- Pot seedlings on once they have about four true leaves, and grow on at around 65°F (18°C).
- Harden off and plant out after the last frost, spacing plants 6-10 inches apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: full sun; light afternoon shade helps in very hot climates.
- Water: keep the soil evenly moist but well drained; reduce watering as plants mature.
- Pinch young plants to encourage branching and more flowering stems.
- Provide twiggy supports in windy spots so the tall stems stay upright.
Bloom Time:
Summer to early fall; plants are slow to develop but reward patience with weeks of bloom.
