How to grow Sweet Pea Spring Sunshine Peach seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Sow 1 inch deep in deep pots 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost (sweet peas form long taproots and dislike root disturbance).
- Outdoors: Direct sow in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in fall in mild-winter climates.
Prepare Your Materials
- Deep pots or seed trays (if starting indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix or prepared garden soil
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Soak seeds overnight in room-temperature water to soften the hard coat (nicking with sandpaper also works).
- Sow 1 inch deep; sweet peas germinate best in cool soil and do not need light to sprout.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light once seedlings emerge.
- Temperature: 55–70°F (13–21°C) — cool conditions give the strongest germination.
Germination
- Seedlings typically emerge in 7–21 days.
- Grow seedlings on in cool, bright conditions; they tolerate light frost once established.
Transplanting
- Plant out after the last frost, handling the root ball gently to avoid disturbing the taproot.
- Harden off for about a week before planting out.
- Space plants 4–6 inches apart along the support.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun.
- Water: Keep soil consistently moist; water regularly during dry spells.
- Fertilizer: Plant in rich soil; feed monthly with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season.
- Set up a trellis, netting, or wigwam at planting time; pinch the growing tips after 2 sets of leaves for bushier plants; cut or deadhead flowers often to prolong blooming.
Note: Sweet pea seeds and pods are not edible and are harmful if eaten.
Bloom Time:
Late spring to summer, about 75–90 days after sowing.
