Supercrest Mix is a cockscomb-type celosia (Celosia cristata) mix selected for large, crested flower heads in an assortment of bright colors. The velvety combs make a bold bedding display and dry well for crafts. Pinching young plants encourages branching and more uniform heads.
Why choose our seeds?
- Large, velvety crested heads in mixed colors
- Bold bedding display; good for drying
- Blooms summer into fall
How to grow Supercrest Mix Cockscomb Celosia seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Direct sow after the last frost, once nights are reliably warm.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining seed-starting mix
- Humidity dome or clear plastic cover
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow shallowly, about 1/8 inch deep, or press onto the surface; light is required for germination.
- Use individual pots or cells — celosia resents root disturbance.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Light is required for germination; supplemental lighting is not necessary.
- Temperature: 70-77°F (21-25°C).
- Humidity: A humidity dome or plastic cover helps hold moisture; remove it at emergence.
Germination
- Germination typically takes 7-15 days.
- Let the surface dry slightly between waterings to avoid damping off.
Transplanting
- Transplant after all frost danger, spacing plants 8-12 inches apart.
- Avoid chilling young plants, which can trigger premature flowering.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun.
- Water: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry; avoid waterlogged soil.
- Fertilizer: Light feeding during the season is enough.
- When plants are 8-12 inches tall, pinch out the growing point to increase branching and even out head size.
- Deadhead spent combs to encourage more blooms.
Bloom Time:
Summer into fall; plants flower about 3 months after the seeds germinate.
