Summer Savory (Satureja hortensis) is a fast-growing annual herb with slender stems and small, aromatic leaves used fresh or dried for seasoning. Plants reach about 12-18 inches tall and bear tiny white to pale lilac flowers from midsummer into fall, which add to the summer display.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Fast-growing annual herb with aromatic leaves
  • Ready to harvest about 60-70 days from sowing
  • Small white to pale lilac flowers in summer

How to grow Summer Savory seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow after all danger of frost has passed.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow on the surface of moist seed-starting mix and press gently; do not cover, as seeds need light to germinate.
  • Mist to keep the surface evenly moist.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light for germination and seedling growth.
  • Temperature: 60-70°F (16-21°C) for germination.

Germination

  • Seeds typically germinate in 10-14 days.
  • Grow seedlings on in bright light with good air circulation.

Transplanting

  • Transplant after all danger of frost, once seedlings have several true leaves.
  • Harden off before planting out.
  • Thin or space plants 6-12 inches apart.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun in well-drained soil.
  • Water: Water regularly; allow the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Fertilizer: Little fertilizer is needed; too much feeding reduces flavor.
  • Begin harvesting once plants reach 6 inches; cut stems just before flowering for the strongest flavor.

Bloom Time:

Small white to pale lilac flowers appear from midsummer to fall.
