Star Columbine is grown for nodding, spurred blooms that add airy movement to spring beds. Its graceful flowers dance above neat mounds of sage-green foliage. Lovely in cottage gardens, woodland edges, and dappled-shade borders.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Nodding, spurred blooms on graceful stems
  • Neat mounds of sage-green foliage
  • Blooms in late spring to early summer; self-sows gently for future seasons

How to grow Star Columbine seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Sow outdoors in early spring after the last frost, or in late summer to early fall for natural stratification.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Cover with a humidity dome or plastic wrap to hold moisture; vent daily.
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow seeds on the surface of the mix and press in lightly — light aids germination; cover with only the finest dusting of mix.
  • Cold-stratify seeds for 3–4 weeks in the refrigerator before sowing to improve germination.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright, indirect light for germination.
  • Temperature: 65–70°F (18–21°C).

Germination

  • Typically 21–30 days; some seeds take longer.
  • Remove the cover at the first sprouts; keep seedlings bright and cool.

Transplanting

  • Move seedlings up when they have 2–3 true leaves; plant out after all frost danger has passed.
  • Harden off for 7–10 days before moving outdoors.
  • Space 12–18 inches apart.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Partial shade is preferred; tolerates full sun in cool climates.
  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist; water during dry spells.
  • Fertilizer: Feed lightly once in spring with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to extend bloom; leave a few seed heads if you want plants to self-sow. Move seedlings while young — columbines form long taproots.

Bloom Time:

Late spring to early summer.
