How to grow Solar Fancy Coreopsis seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Direct sow in spring after frost, or in fall so winter cold naturally stratifies the seed.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining seed-starting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface sow: press seed gently into the mix and do not cover, or cover with only a whisper of vermiculite; light aids germination.
- For spring sowing, a 30-day cold stratification in the refrigerator improves results.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Needed for germination; do not exclude light from the tray.
- Temperature: 65-77°F (18-25°C).
Germination
- Germination typically takes 14-28 days.
- Keep the surface of the mix evenly moist but not waterlogged.
Transplanting
- Plant out after all risk of frost, 8-12 inches apart.
- Harden off seedlings gradually before transplanting.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun.
- Water: Water until established; mature plants tolerate dry spells but bloom best with occasional water. Avoid soggy or overly rich soil, which causes floppy growth.
- Fertilizer: Generally not a heavy feeder; compost at planting is enough.
- Deadhead regularly to prolong the season; if blooming stalls midsummer, cut plants back by half for fresh growth.
Bloom Time:
Late spring through fall; often flowers the first year from seed.
