Scarlet Pimpernel (Anagallis arvensis) is a charming low-growing annual with star-shaped vermilion-red flowers with purple centers. Its blooms open in sunshine and close in cloudy weather — earning it the nickname ‘poor man’s weatherglass.’ It forms a delicate 6-inch groundcover for sunny edges and containers.
Why choose our seeds?
- Distinctive red star-shaped blooms with purple centers
- Fascinating flowers that open and close with the weather
- Low, spreading habit for edges, rockeries, and containers
How to grow Scarlet Pimpernel seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost (it does not transplant well — direct sowing is preferred).
- Outdoors: Direct sow in fall or early spring, where it is to grow.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface sow — press in and cover very lightly (no more than 1/8 inch); seeds need light to germinate.
- No special treatment is needed.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun.
- Temperature: 55–70°F (13–21°C).
Germination
- Expect germination in 30–45 days — be patient and keep moist.
- Do not let the seed bed dry out during this long wait.
Transplanting
- Best direct sown; if started indoors, transplant very young after frost.
- Harden off for 7–10 days before planting out.
- Space plants 12 inches apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun.
- Water: Keep watered until established; mature plants need water mainly in dry spells.
- Fertilizer: Not a heavy feeder.
- Self-sows readily — remove unwanted volunteers. Note: the plants can be toxic if consumed.
Bloom Time:
Late spring through fall (May–October).
