Sapphire Blue is a compact edging lobelia (Lobelia erinus) smothered in vivid sapphire-blue flowers over neat, low mounds of foliage. A long-blooming favorite for bed edges, rockeries, containers, and window boxes.
Why choose our seeds?
- Vivid sapphire-blue flowers over compact, low foliage
- Long blooming season from late spring to fall
- Ideal for edging, containers, and window boxes
How to grow Sapphire Blue Lobelia erinus seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Sow indoors 10–12 weeks before the last expected frost — lobelia is slow to reach flowering size.
- Outdoors: Transplant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed; direct outdoor sowing is unreliable.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots
- Fine seed-starting mix
- Humidity dome or plastic bag
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow on the surface of moist mix and press in gently — do NOT cover; lobelia seeds need light to germinate.
- Keep the surface evenly moist but not waterlogged.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light; do not exclude light during germination.
- Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C).
- Humidity: Cover with a dome or plastic bag to hold moisture until sprouting.
Germination
- Seedlings typically emerge in 14–21 days.
- Grow seedlings on in cooler, bright conditions once sprouted.
Transplanting
- Transplant when seedlings are large enough to handle and all frost danger has passed.
- Harden off for 7–10 days before planting out.
- Space plants about 4 inches apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun to part shade; afternoon shade helps in hot climates.
- Water: Keep soil consistently moist; do not let containers dry out.
- Fertilizer: Feed every 2 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer through summer.
- Shear plants back by about half in mid-summer to encourage a fresh flush of bloom.
Bloom Time:
Late spring to fall (until hard frost).
