Ruby Spider is a striking spider-type daylily (Hemerocallis hybrida) known for its very large, ruby-red blooms with long, narrow, twisting petals. Please note: daylilies do not come true from seed — seedlings will vary and may not match the named parent, which makes growing them from seed a fun experiment.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Very large, spider-form blooms in rich ruby red
  • Easy-care perennial for sunny borders
  • Strappy foliage looks good all season, even between flushes of bloom

How to grow Ruby Spider Daylily seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last expected frost.
  • Outdoors: Sow directly after the last frost once the soil has warmed.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots
  • Well-draining seed-starting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • For best results, chill seeds in the refrigerator for 3–4 weeks at 35–45°F before sowing to break dormancy.
  • Sow 1/4–1/2 inch deep and keep evenly moist.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light once seedlings emerge.
  • Temperature: Around 70°F (21°C) or warmer for germination.

Germination

  • Seedlings typically emerge in 7–30 days.
  • Grow on in bright light at normal room temperatures.

Transplanting

  • Transplant after all danger of frost has passed.
  • Harden off for about a week before planting out.
  • Space plants 12–18 inches apart.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade.
  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist the first season; established plants tolerate short dry spells.
  • Fertilizer: Average fertility is fine; a spring top-dressing of compost is enough.
  • Remove spent flower stems after blooming to keep plants tidy.

Bloom Time:

Summer; hardy perennial in zones 3–9.
