Ruby Eclipse (Helianthus annuus) is a branching bicolor sunflower with painterly blooms in deep burgundy-red edged and tipped with cream, around a rich chocolate-brown center — no two flowers exactly alike. Plants reach 5 to 7 feet tall and produce many blooms per plant.
A useful bonus: the blooms are pollen-free, so cut stems do not shed messy pollen indoors and are kinder to allergy sufferers. Flowering runs from midsummer to frost.
Why choose our seeds?
- Bicolor blooms in burgundy-red and cream with a chocolate center, each one unique
- Pollen-free flowers — clean cut stems, better for indoor arrangements
- Branching 5–7 ft plants with a long bloom season, midsummer to frost
How to grow Ruby Eclipse Sunflower seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost in peat or paper pots; transplant carefully.
- Outdoors: Direct sow outdoors after the last frost, once soil is above 70°F (21°C) — preferred method.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow 1/2 to 1 inch deep.
- Sow successions a few weeks apart for continuous cutting.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun.
- Temperature: Soil temperature 70–75°F (21–24°C) for germination.
- Humidity: Water consistently until established.
Germination
- Germination in 7 to 14 days.
- Thin to the strongest seedling per spot.
Transplanting
- Transplant with care after the last frost; sunflowers resent root disturbance.
- Spacing: 18 to 24 inches apart for branching types.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun all day.
- Water: Regular water while young; established plants handle dry spells. Avoid heavy nitrogen.
- Fertilizer: Light feeding at planting if soil is poor; excess nitrogen grows leaves at the expense of flowers.
- Cut stems when petals just open for the longest vase life; strong lateral stems are ideal for bouquets. Stake in windy sites.
