Royal Carpet Sweet Alyssum (Lobularia maritima) is an award-winning variety that forms a dense, fragrant carpet of magenta, violet and fuchsia blooms. It won the All-America Selections award in 1953 and remains a favorite for edging, borders and containers.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Dense carpets of fragrant blooms in magenta, violet and fuchsia
  • An All-America Selections winner from 1953, still a garden favorite
  • A classic edging and container plant for full sun or partial shade

How to grow Royal Carpet Sweet Alyssum seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow outdoors after the last frost, once the soil can be worked.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Humidity dome or plastic wrap to hold moisture
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Surface-sow the tiny seeds: press them gently into the soil and do not cover, as light is needed for germination.
  • Keep the soil surface evenly moist until the seeds sprout.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: light is required for germination
  • Temperature: soil temperature of 60-70°F (15-21°C)

Germination

  • Seeds sprout in about 7-14 days under bright, moist conditions.
  • Seedlings grow quickly; thin or transplant when they are easy to handle.

Transplanting

  • Harden off for several days before setting plants out after the last frost.
  • Space plants about 6 inches apart for a continuous carpet effect.

Care Tips

  • Sun: full sun to partial shade.
  • Water: keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy.
  • Shear plants back by about a third in mid-season to refresh the foliage and encourage a new flush of bloom.
  • Feeding is generally not needed; too much fertilizer favors leaves over flowers.

Bloom Time:

Spring until frost; blooming is heaviest in mild weather.
