How to grow Rosie O'Day Alyssum seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Sow 4-6 weeks before your last frost for the earliest bloom.
- Outdoors: Direct sow after the last frost, or sow in late summer in mild climates for fall bloom.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots
- Well-draining seed-starting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow on the surface of the mix and press in lightly; the seeds need light to germinate, so cover only with a whisper of mix or vermiculite, or leave uncovered.
- Mist to settle the seeds into the surface.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Light is required; do not bury the seeds deeply.
- Temperature: 64-70°F (18-21°C).
Germination
- Seeds germinate in 7-21 days.
- Thin or transplant seedlings to about 6 inches apart.
Transplanting
- Plant out after the last frost, spacing 6 inches apart.
- Plants are compact and shallow-rooted; handle gently.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun to light shade.
- Water: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially until established; soggy soil causes rot.
- Fertilizer: A light feeding at planting is enough; avoid heavy nitrogen.
- Shear plants back by half if bloom pauses in hot weather; they will flush back into flower within about four weeks as it cools.
Bloom Time:
Late spring to midsummer, and again in fall if sheared back.
