The rose-painted calathea (Calathea roseopicta, also sold as Goeppertia roseopicta) is a tropical houseplant grown for its broad leaves patterned in rings of green, cream and pink over a purple underside. Like other prayer plants, it lifts its leaves in the evening and lowers them by morning. Growing it from seed takes patience, but the reward is a truly striking foliage plant.
Why choose our seeds?
- Broad, patterned leaves in green, cream and pink with a purple reverse
- A statement tropical houseplant for bright indoor spots
- Prayer-plant habit: leaves rise at night and relax by day
How to grow Rose Painted Calathea seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Sow indoors at any time during the warm season — spring, summer or autumn.
- Outdoors: An indoor plant in most climates; grow outdoors only where it never freezes.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Humidity dome or plastic wrap to hold moisture
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow on sterile seed mix and cover only lightly, about 2 mm deep.
- No scarification or pre-soaking is needed.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright, indirect light — never harsh direct sun.
- Temperature: Around 77°F (25°C) by day, a little cooler at night.
- Humidity: High humidity is essential — sow in a propagator or enclose the pot in a clear plastic bag, opening it briefly every couple of days for fresh air.
Germination
- 3-8 weeks; germination is often uneven.
- Keep seedlings warm, humid and evenly moist; prick out into small pots of houseplant mix when about 5 cm (2 inches) tall.
Transplanting
- Pot up seedlings as they outgrow their cells; there is no outdoor planting in most climates.
- One seedling per small pot; move to larger pots as plants grow.
Care Tips
- Sun: Bright, indirect light.
- Water: Keep the mix evenly moist; never let the pot sit in water.
- Fertilizer: Feed lightly with diluted houseplant fertilizer during spring and summer.
- Keep away from cold drafts and sudden temperature swings; steady warmth keeps the foliage at its best.
Bloom Time:
Grown for its foliage; small pink blooms may appear in warm, humid conditions but are secondary to the leaves.
