Rocky Mountain Bee Plant (Cleome serrulata) is an annual wildflower with tall, upright stems crowned by clusters of pink-to-lavender blooms with long, spidery stamens. Growing 2-4 feet tall, it blooms heavily from late spring into fall, self-sows freely, and makes a striking cut flower — note the whole plant carries a musky, distinctive scent.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Tall upright stems with pink-to-lavender flower clusters
  • 2-4 feet tall; blooms heavily late spring through fall
  • Self-sows freely; striking cut flower with a distinctive scent

How to grow Rocky Mountain Bee Plant seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow in late fall (so winter chilling breaks dormancy) or in spring around the last frost date.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining seed-starting mix
  • Damp paper towel and a plastic bag (optional, for stratification)
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • For spring sowing, cold stratify first: keep seeds on a damp paper towel in a sealed bag in the refrigerator for 2-4 weeks.
  • Sow on the surface and cover very lightly — seeds need light to germinate.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light; surface-sown seeds must stay uncovered.
  • Temperature: 65-75°F (18-24°C); steady warmth and moisture help.

Germination

  • Seedlings emerge in 10-21 days, sometimes longer — the germination rate is naturally uneven.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Transplanting

  • Move out after all frost danger has passed; harden off first.
  • Space or thin to 6-12 inches apart in well-drained soil.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun to light shade.
  • Water: Water regularly until established; mature plants are quite low-maintenance.
  • Fertilizer: None needed — plants adapt to average soil and bloom better without it.
  • Pinch stem tips to encourage branching; stake tall plants in windy spots.

Bloom Time:

Late spring through fall; plants reseed themselves for next year.
