Red Zunyi Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is a sacred lotus selection grown for large red blooms held above round, water-shedding leaves. It is made for ponds, tubs and water gardens in a sunny spot.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Large red aquatic blooms above dramatic round foliage
  • Suited to ponds, large tubs and aquatic planters
  • A long-lived aquatic perennial once established

How to grow Red Zunyi Lotus seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start in late spring or summer in a container of warm water.
  • Outdoors: Not direct-sown - sprout seeds indoors first, then move the young plant out.

Prepare Your Materials

  • A file or sandpaper for scarifying
  • A clear container of warm, clean water
  • A wide pot with heavy clay soil or aquatic planting media

Sowing the Seeds

  • Scarify first: gently file or nick the hard seed coat until the pale inner layer shows, without damaging the core.
  • Soak the scarified seeds in warm water (75-85°F / 24-29°C), changing the water daily.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light or sun for the sprouting container.
  • Temperature: Warm water, 75-85°F (24-29°C); cold water slows sprouting.

Germination

  • Seeds typically swell and sprout in 4-7 days.
  • Let the sprout reach 4-6 inches before potting it up.

Transplanting

  • Pot the sprouted seed in heavy clay soil with the new growth above the surface.
  • Submerge the pot under 2-4 inches of calm water in full sun (at least 6 hours daily).

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun, 6-8 hours daily, for the best flowering.
  • Water: Keep the pot submerged; avoid fountains and fast-moving water.
  • Fertilizer: Use aquatic fertilizer tablets once the plant is established.
  • In cold climates, overwinter dormant tubers in a frost-free spot.

Bloom Time:

Typically the second growing season; early-started plants can bloom the first year.
