Red Royal Catchfly (Silene regia) produces vivid crimson-red flowers on upright stems in summer. Its brilliant blooms stand out in borders and wildflower plantings, flowering from late June through August.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Vivid crimson-red summer flowers
  • Upright stems suited to borders and wildflower beds
  • Blooms from late June through August

How to grow Red Royal Catchfly seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start in spring after a cold-moist stratification period (see below).
  • Outdoors: Sow in fall so winter provides natural chilling, for spring germination.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Plastic wrap or humidity dome (until germination)
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Surface sow — the seed needs light to germinate, so do not cover it.
  • Give about 60 days of cold-moist stratification (in a refrigerator) before spring sowing, or sow outdoors in fall.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Light is required for germination; grow seedlings in bright light.
  • Temperature: Around 60–70°F (16–21°C) for spring germination.
  • Humidity: Keep the surface evenly moist until germination.

Germination

  • Germination follows the chilling period in spring; keep the mix consistently moist.
  • Move sprouted seedlings into bright light promptly.

Transplanting

  • Transplant when seedlings have several true leaves and frost danger has passed.
  • Harden off before planting out.
  • Space about 12 inches apart in well-drained soil.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist during establishment.
  • Fertilizer: Generally not heavy feeders.

Bloom Time:

Late June through August.
