Red Kaveri is a sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) with peony-form blooms in shades of red. It is an aquatic plant for ponds, water gardens and large containers, with round, waxy leaves and flowers held above the water. Lotus needs a long, warm season to bloom well.
Why choose our seeds?
- Peony-form blooms in shades of red
- Aquatic plant for ponds, water features and large containers
- Dramatic round foliage held above the water
How to grow Red Kaveri Lotus seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors in spring: sprout the seeds in a glass of warm water, then move seedlings to pots once they have roots and leaves.
- Outdoors: Start in containers outdoors only after water temperatures stay above 70°F (21°C) — lotus needs a long, warm season.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Clear glass or jar for sprouting
- Heavy clay loam or aquatic planting mix (avoid light potting mixes that float)
- Wide pot or container without drainage holes
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- File or nick the hard seed coat on one end until the white inner layer just shows — do not damage the inner core.
- Soak the scarified seeds in warm water (75-85°F / 24-29°C), changing the water daily until sprouts appear.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun daily once planted.
- Temperature: Warm water, 75-85°F (24-29°C), for sprouting.
Germination
- Sprouts usually appear within 1-7 days of soaking, sometimes a few weeks.
- Once the sprout is 4-6 inches long with roots, press it gently into a pot of clay loam and submerge the pot under 2-4 inches of water.
Transplanting
- Set the planted pot into its final pond or container position once the seedling has several leaves.
- Spacing: One plant per wide container (18 inches or wider for good growth)
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun — 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Water: Keep the pot submerged; maintain clean, calm water 2-4 inches above the soil, deeper as the plant grows.
- Fertilizer: Feed lightly with aquatic plant fertilizer once several floating leaves have formed.
- Protect from frost — in cold climates, move containers to a frost-free spot or store dormant tubers for winter.
Bloom Time:
Mid-summer; plants started from seed usually bloom in their second growing season.
