How to grow Red Geranium seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last expected frost.
- Outdoors: Transplant outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed and nights stay warm.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots
- Well-draining potting mix
- Humidity dome or plastic wrap (helps keep the mix evenly moist)
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Cover seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite or fine mix, about 1/4 inch deep — light is not required for germination.
- No special pre-treatment needed.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light once seedlings emerge.
- Temperature: 70–75°F (21–24°C) for germination.
- Humidity: Keep the mix evenly moist until sprouting; remove the dome once seedlings appear.
Germination
- Seedlings typically emerge in 7–21 days.
- Grow young seedlings in bright light at cooler room temperatures, around 60–65°F.
Transplanting
- Transplant when seedlings have 2–3 sets of true leaves and all frost danger has passed.
- Harden off for 7–10 days before planting out.
- Space plants 8–12 inches apart in beds, or one plant per 6–8 inch pot.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sun daily).
- Water: Water when the top inch of soil is dry; avoid soggy soil.
- Fertilizer: Feed every 2–4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season.
- Pinch the growing tips of young plants to encourage branching and more flower heads.
Bloom Time:
Early summer to first frost.
