  • Quilled, cactus-like petals in warm orange
  • Adds unique texture to beds and bouquets
  • Easy, fast, and long-blooming from seed

How to grow Radio Calendula seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow in early spring once the soil reaches 60°F (16°C); calendula tolerates light frost.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow 1/2 inch (1 cm) deep and cover — seeds germinate best in darkness.
  • Water in well after sowing.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light after germination.
  • Temperature: 60-65°F (16-18°C) is ideal for germination.

Germination

  • Germination takes 5-15 days.
  • Thin or transplant when seedlings have 1-2 true leaves.

Transplanting

  • Transplant after the last frost, or set out in cool weather once hardened.
  • Harden off if started indoors.
  • Space 12-16 inches apart in well-drained soil.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun; appreciates a little afternoon shade in hot climates.
  • Water: Water regularly until established; do not overwater.
  • Fertilizer: Average soil is fine — rich soil is not needed.
  • Deadhead faded flowers regularly to keep blooms coming; plants may pause in extreme heat and resume in fall.

Bloom Time:

Late spring to fall, starting about 60 days from sowing.
