'Queen Red Lime' (Zinnia elegans) is a striking bicolor zinnia: deep maroon-red centers ringed by lime-green petals that bleed out to pale red edges, a combination unusual enough to earn an RHS Award of Garden Merit. The stiff, densely petalled blooms are held on strong stems about 30 inches tall, making them excellent cut flowers. Plants bloom from summer until frost.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Unusual maroon-and-lime bicolor blooms, an RHS Award of Garden Merit variety
  • Strong stems ideal for cutting
  • Blooms continuously from summer until the first frost with deadheading

How to grow Queen Red Lime Zinnia seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow after all danger of frost, when the soil is over 70°F (21°C).

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining seed-starting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow about 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep and cover lightly.
  • Sow a few seeds every 8-12 inches and thin to the most robust seedlings.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Not required for germination.
  • Temperature: 75-85°F (24-29°C) is optimum.

Germination

  • Seedlings emerge in 7-10 days.
  • Keep soil lightly moist but not wet until germination.

Transplanting

  • Set out after the last frost, spacing plants 8-12 inches apart.
  • Pinch young plants back for bushier growth and more stems.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun; tolerates part shade in hot climates.
  • Water: Water at the base; avoid wetting the foliage to reduce mildew.
  • Fertilizer: Work compost into the bed before planting; avoid excess nitrogen, which grows leaves at the expense of flowers.
  • Deadhead spent blooms regularly to keep flowers coming.

Bloom Time:

About 75-80 days from sowing; summer until the first frost.
