Purple Campanula Bellflower (Campanula medium, Canterbury bells) produces tall spikes of large, bell-shaped purple blooms in late spring and early summer of its second year. A classic cottage-garden biennial, it also makes an elegant cut flower.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Large, bell-shaped purple blooms on sturdy 30-40 inch stems
  • Biennial habit: leafy rosettes the first year, flowering spikes the second
  • Suited to borders, cottage gardens and cutting gardens

How to grow Purple Campanula Bellflower seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start seeds 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Sow directly after the last frost, or in fall for blooms the following year.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow on the soil surface and press in gently, or cover very lightly - light is required for germination.
  • Mist to water so the tiny seeds are not displaced.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light; seeds need light to germinate.
  • Temperature: 65-68°F (18-20°C).

Germination

  • Seedlings typically emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Keep the mix evenly moist and give seedlings strong light to prevent legginess.

Transplanting

  • Transplant after the last frost once seedlings have several true leaves; harden off first.
  • Space plants 10-12 inches apart.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist; mulch helps retain moisture.
  • Fertilizer: Not heavy feeders - compost worked into the bed at planting is enough.
  • Deadhead spent spikes to tidy plants; allow some seed to drop if you want self-sown seedlings.

Bloom Time:

Late spring to early summer of the second year.
