Bougainvillea is a vigorous tropical vine grown for its masses of papery purple bracts that surround its small true flowers. Seed-grown plants make excellent container specimens in cooler climates, where they can be overwintered indoors. Please note: seedlings can vary in flower color from the parent plant.
Why choose our seeds?
- Masses of vivid purple, papery bracts over a long season
- Vigorous climbing habit — beautiful on trellises, walls, and in large containers
- Thrives in full sun and warm conditions
How to grow Purple Bougainvillea seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last expected frost.
- Outdoors: In frost-free climates, sow directly in warm soil after all danger of frost has passed.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots
- Well-draining, sandy potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Soak seeds in room-temperature water for 24 hours before sowing.
- Sow 1/4 inch deep and cover lightly with mix.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light; move to full sun once seedlings are established.
- Temperature: 70–80°F (21–27°C) — steady warmth is essential.
Germination
- Germination is slow and irregular, typically 2–8 weeks; some seeds may take longer, so be patient.
- Keep the mix lightly moist but never waterlogged.
Transplanting
- Transplant when seedlings have several sets of true leaves; handle the roots gently.
- Harden off before moving outdoors.
- Space plants 24–32 inches apart, or grow in a large container with a trellis for support.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun (at least 5–6 hours of direct sun daily) for the heaviest bloom.
- Water: Water deeply, then let the soil dry slightly between waterings; avoid waterlogged soil.
- Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season.
- Prune to shape after flowering and provide a trellis or support for the climbing habit.
Bloom Time:
Late spring through fall in warm climates (hardy in zones 9–11); grown as a container plant elsewhere.
