Pink Petticoat columbine (Aquilegia) produces soft pink, spurred blooms that dangle like little lanterns above lacy foliage in spring. A hardy perennial for part shade, it is a natural under trees, along shaded paths, and in woodland-style gardens — and it self-sows gently to form colonies over time.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Delicate soft-pink spurred flowers on graceful stems
  • Thrives in part shade where many flowers won't
  • Hardy perennial that self-sows for ongoing blooms

How to grow Pink Petticoat Columbine seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start 6–8 weeks before the last frost; cold stratification first improves results.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow in spring, or in late summer to autumn so winter chilling breaks dormancy.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting
  • Damp paper towel and a plastic bag (optional, for stratification)

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow on the surface and press gently into the soil — columbine seeds need light to germinate, so do not cover them.
  • Optional but helpful: chill seeds in a damp paper towel in the refrigerator for 3–4 weeks before sowing to improve germination.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright, indirect light; surface-sown seeds must stay uncovered.
  • Temperature: 65–70°F (18–21°C).

Germination

  • Seedlings emerge in 21–30 days — columbine is slow, so be patient.
  • Keep the surface lightly moist until sprouts appear.

Transplanting

  • Pot up when seedlings have a few true leaves.
  • Move out after the last frost; harden off first.
  • Space plants 12–16 inches apart.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Part shade is ideal; full sun is fine in cool climates with enough moisture.
  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist but well drained.
  • Fertilizer: A light spring feeding with compost is enough.
  • Deadhead to extend bloom, or leave seed pods to ripen if you want self-sown seedlings; cut foliage back after bloom for fresh growth.

Bloom Time:

Spring to early summer; plants grown from seed usually bloom in their second year.
