Pink Ink of Sharon is a rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) grown for its pink blooms on an upright, vase-shaped shrub. It flowers from midsummer into fall, bringing color when most summer shrubs are done, and works well as a hedge, screen, or specimen.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Pink blooms on a sturdy, upright deciduous shrub
  • Flowers midsummer to fall — late-season color for the garden
  • Adaptable shrub for hedges, screens, and foundation plantings

How to grow Pink Ink of Sharon seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Sow outdoors after the last frost, once the soil is warm.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Fine sandpaper for scarifying the hard seed coat
  • Clear plastic wrap or a humidity dome
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Scarify: gently rub each seed with fine sandpaper, then soak in room-temperature water for 24 hours
  • Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in moist seed-starting mix and tamp gently

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light; full sun once planted out
  • Temperature: Warm conditions around 70-80°F (21-27°C)
  • Humidity: Cover with plastic wrap or a dome until seedlings emerge

Germination

  • Germination generally takes 2-4 weeks
  • Remove the cover once seedlings appear and grow on in bright light

Transplanting

  • Transplant after all frost danger has passed
  • Harden off over 7-10 days
  • Space plants 18-24 inches apart

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun for the best flowering; tolerates light shade
  • Water: Keep evenly moist while young; established plants handle short dry spells
  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring; avoid over-fertilizing
  • Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the shrub and remove dead wood
  • Note: seedlings grown from seed of a named variety may vary somewhat from the parent plant

Bloom Time:

Midsummer through fall.
