Lacy phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia) is a fast-growing annual with ferny, lacy foliage and coiled clusters of soft lavender-blue flowers. It blooms about two months after sowing, self-sows readily, and doubles as a useful green-manure cover crop.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Coiled clusters of soft lavender-blue flowers
  • Fast growing — blooms about 60 days after sowing
  • Easy direct-sow annual; useful as a cover crop and green manure

How to grow Phacelia tanacetifolia seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Can be started indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost, but direct sowing is preferred.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked; sow again in late summer for fall flowers.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Prepared garden bed with loosened soil
  • Spray bottle or gentle watering can for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Press seeds into the soil surface and cover very lightly, about 1/8 inch deep.
  • Keep the seedbed consistently moist until germination.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Full sun is best.
  • Temperature: 55–70°F (13–21°C) for germination.

Germination

  • Seedlings typically emerge in 7–14 days.
  • Thin or transplant seedlings once they are a few inches tall.

Transplanting

  • Thin seedlings to 6–12 inches apart.
  • If transplanting, move seedlings while small to avoid disturbing the roots.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Water: Water during establishment; mature plants need water only in dry spells.
  • Fertilizer: Generally not needed — phacelia thrives in average soil.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to prevent heavy self-sowing, or let some seed drop for next year's plants.

Bloom Time:

Summer, about 60 days after sowing.
