Peacock Plant (Calathea makoyana, also called Cathedral Windows) is a tropical houseplant grown for its extraordinary foliage: large, oval leaves patterned with dark green feather-like markings and purple undersides. It is a true foliage plant for indoor growing; the patterned leaves are the entire show. Seeds germinate slowly in warm, humid conditions.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Striking patterned foliage with feather-like dark green markings and purple leaf undersides
  • A statement tropical houseplant for bright indoor spaces
  • Leaves fold upward at night in the classic prayer-plant movement

How to grow Peacock Plant seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: The only method; sow in pots and grow as a houseplant year-round.
  • Outdoors: Not suitable; this tropical plant needs warm indoor conditions.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Small pots with drainage holes
  • Peat-based or coco-based potting mix that holds moisture yet drains well
  • Clear plastic bag or humidity dome
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow on the surface of the mix and cover with a thin layer of mix.
  • Cover the pot with a clear bag or dome to hold warmth and humidity.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright, indirect light; direct sun scorches the leaves.
  • Temperature: 70-75°F (21-24°C).

Germination

  • Seeds germinate slowly, in 3-6 weeks; keep the mix consistently moist but not soggy.
  • Ventilate the cover daily to prevent mold.

Transplanting

  • Pot seedlings on individually once they have a few true leaves.
  • Use a rich, moisture-retentive but well-draining mix.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Bright, indirect light indoors; never direct midday sun.
  • Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy; calatheas dislike drying out and are sensitive to hard tap water.
  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted houseplant fertilizer.
  • Provide high humidity: a pebble tray, grouping with other plants, or a humidifier keeps leaf edges from browning.

Bloom Time:

Grown for foliage; small flowers are insignificant and rarely appear indoors.
