Orange Strawflower (Xerochrysum bracteatum) is a classic everlasting flower prized for its vivid orange, papery petals that hold their color long after cutting. Its daisy-like blooms are a favorite for fresh bouquets and dried flower arrangements alike. Grown as a warm-season annual, it blooms freely from mid-summer until the first frost.
Why choose our seeds?
- Rich orange blooms with stiff, papery petals that keep their color when dried
- Long bloom season, from mid-summer through early fall
- Excellent for cutting gardens, borders, containers, and everlasting dried arrangements
How to grow Orange Strawflower seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost date.
- Outdoors: Direct sow in spring after all danger of frost has passed, once the soil is warm.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow seeds on the surface of moist soil and press them in gently; do not cover, as the seeds need light to germinate.
- Mist gently to settle the seeds without washing them away.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light; full sun is ideal for strong, compact plants.
- Temperature: Keep the soil at 70–75°F (21–24°C) for best germination.
Germination
- Seedlings typically emerge in 7–10 days.
- Keep the soil lightly moist, but not waterlogged, until seedlings are established.
Transplanting
- Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost, once they have a few sets of true leaves.
- Space plants 10–12 inches apart in the garden or in containers.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun, at least 6 hours of direct light daily.
- Water: Water moderately; let the soil surface dry between waterings and avoid overwatering.
- Fertilizer: A light feeding of balanced fertilizer once plants are established is enough; strawflowers do not need rich soil.
- Deadhead faded blooms regularly to encourage more flowers through the season.
Bloom Time:
Mid-summer to first frost.
