Bougainvillea is a tropical, shrubby vine grown for its masses of papery, brightly colored bracts — the true flowers are tiny and white, tucked inside the showy bracts. Orange Bougainvillea brings warm sunset tones to trellises, fences and large containers. Plants grown from seed can vary in color and habit, so sow with a spirit of discovery and give seedlings plenty of warmth.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Masses of bright orange, papery bracts surrounding small true flowers
  • Vigorous climbing or trailing habit for trellises, arbors, fences and large pots
  • Tropical shrubby vine that can flower for much of the year where winters stay mild

How to grow Orange Bougainvillea seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start seeds indoors at any time of year where you can provide steady warmth; allow 8-10 weeks of indoor growth before moving plants outside in warm weather.
  • Outdoors: Sow outdoors only after the last frost, when nights stay reliably above 60°F (15°C).

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat; optionally, nick the coat lightly with sandpaper to help water get in.
  • Sow about 1/4 inch deep in well-draining seed mix.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright, indirect light until seedlings develop true leaves, then move to full sun.
  • Temperature: 70-85°F (21-29°C) for germination; keep growing seedlings above 60°F (15°C).

Germination

  • 2-6 weeks — germination is slow and irregular, so keep the mix evenly moist (never waterlogged) and be patient.
  • Give seedlings strong, bright light to keep them compact; leggy seedlings need more light.

Transplanting

  • When seedlings have 2-3 sets of true leaves and stand 4-6 inches tall.
  • Harden off gradually over 7-10 days before moving outdoors.
  • 3-5 feet apart — bougainvillea grows into a large vine or shrub.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun daily for the best flowering.
  • Water: Water deeply, then let the top of the soil dry out between waterings; established plants dislike constantly soggy roots.
  • Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season; too much nitrogen favors leaves over flowers.
  • Provide a trellis, fence or arbor for climbing forms.

Bloom Time:

Summer into fall in warm climates; in regions with frost, plants bloom during the warm months and rest in winter.
