- Blooms continuously from summer through fall
How to grow Oklahoma Salmon Zinnia seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 3-4 weeks before your last frost in individual pots; transplant young, as zinnias dislike root disturbance.
- Outdoors: Direct sow after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed — direct sowing is the preferred method.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow about 1/4 inch deep and cover lightly with soil.
- Keep the soil evenly moist until seedlings emerge.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun.
- Temperature: 70-75°F (21-24°C) for germination; wait for soil above 60°F (16°C) outdoors.
Germination
- 4-7 days in warm soil.
- Thin seedlings to the final spacing once they are a few inches tall.
Transplanting
- If started indoors, transplant while seedlings are still small with only a pair or two of true leaves.
- Spacing: 9-12 inches apart for good air circulation
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun daily.
- Water: Water at the base of the plants and keep soil evenly moist; avoid wetting the foliage.
- Fertilizer: Light feeding is enough; compost worked into the bed before planting supports steady bloom.
- Deadhead or cut blooms frequently to keep new flowers coming.
- Pinch plants when they are 8-12 inches tall to encourage branching and more stems.
Bloom Time:
Summer through fall, typically 8-12 weeks after sowing.
