Four o'clocks (Mirabilis jalapa) are old-fashioned favorites whose fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers open in late afternoon and stay open into the evening. This mix produces bushy, vigorous plants covered in blooms of many colors — often several shades on the same plant. A tender perennial usually grown as an annual.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Fragrant trumpet flowers that open in late afternoon
  • Mix of many bloom colors, often several shades per plant
  • Easy and fast from seed; bushy plants for beds, borders, and large containers

How to grow Multicolor Mix Four O'Clocks seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow after all danger of frost has passed and the soil is warm.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if starting indoors)
  • Well-draining seed-starting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Soak seeds overnight in room-temperature water (or nick the hard coat) to speed germination.
  • Sow 1/4 inch deep and keep evenly moist.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light once seedlings emerge.
  • Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C) for germination.

Germination

  • Seedlings typically emerge in 7–14 days.
  • Grow on in bright light at normal room temperatures.

Transplanting

  • Transplant after all danger of frost has passed.
  • Harden off for about a week before planting out.
  • Space plants 12–18 inches apart.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade (plants may grow lankier in shade).
  • Water: Water regularly; established plants tolerate short dry spells.
  • Fertilizer: Average soil is fine; avoid heavy feeding, which favors leaves over flowers.
  • Deadhead spent blooms to limit self-sowing — four o'clocks reseed readily.

Bloom Time:

Summer to fall.
