Moulin Rouge sunflower (Helianthus annuus) bears deep red, velvety flower heads that stand out dramatically in summer borders. Like all sunflowers it is fast and easy from seed, reaching bloom in about two months. Plant in groups for a bold display, or grow a few for striking cut flowers.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Deep red, velvety blooms unlike ordinary yellow sunflowers
  • Fast-growing annual — blooms about 65-75 days from sowing
  • Excellent cut flower with sturdy stems

How to grow Moulin Rouge Sunflower Seeds-Helianthus annuus seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Can be started indoors 2-3 weeks before the last frost in deep pots, but direct sowing is best.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow after the last frost, when the soil is at least 60°F (16°C).

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow 1/2-1 inch (1-2.5 cm) deep.
  • Sow 2-3 seeds per spot and thin to the strongest seedling.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Full sun from the start.
  • Temperature: Fastest germination at 70-86°F (21-30°C).

Germination

  • Germination takes 5-14 days.
  • Protect young seedlings from slugs and snails.

Transplanting

  • If started indoors, transplant promptly when seedlings have 2-4 true leaves — sunflowers dislike root disturbance.
  • Harden off before planting out.
  • Space 6-12 inches apart for small varieties, 12-18 inches for tall ones.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun — at least 6-8 hours of direct sun daily.
  • Water: Water regularly until established; mature plants need only moderate water.
  • Fertilizer: Average soil is fine; too much nitrogen produces leaves instead of flowers.
  • Stake tall varieties in windy spots; succession-sow every few weeks for continuous blooms.

Bloom Time:

Summer, about 65-75 days after sowing.
