This mix combines red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) and black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis) seeds for a varied berry patch. Red raspberries bear sweet red berries on upright canes, while black raspberries produce glossy black berries with their own distinct flavor. Both are perennial cane fruits for cool to temperate climates.

Seed Information

  • Type: Fruit Seeds
  • Common Name: Mix Red & Black Raspberry
  • Botanical Name: Rubus idaeus and Rubus occidentalis
  • Life Cycle: Perennial shrubs; hardy to USDA zone 4
  • Sunlight: Full sun
  • Watering: Regular moisture; avoid soggy soil
  • Growth Habit: Upright to arching canes 3–6 ft tall
  • Soil Type: Rich, well-drained soil
  • Planting Time: Sow outdoors in fall, or stratify and sow in spring
  • Years to Fruit: 2–3 years from seed

Growing Instructions

  • When to Plant: Sow outdoors in fall for natural winter stratification, or cold-stratify and sow in spring.
  • Soil: Use fertile, well-draining soil rich in organic matter.
  • Sunlight: Full sun, at least 6–8 hours daily, for the best crops.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during germination and establishment.
  • Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings to 2–3 feet apart.
  • Germination: Both types need cold, moist stratification — refrigerate seeds in a damp medium for about 90 days, then sow 1/8 inch deep and keep moist. Germination is slow and uneven, often taking many weeks.
  • Harvest: Pick red berries when fully red and black berries when deep purple-black and easily detached.
  • Tips: Suited to USDA zones 4–9. Mulch to keep roots cool and moist, and prune out old canes yearly to encourage fresh growth.
