McKana Giant Mix Columbine (Aquilegia x hybrida) is a classic long-spurred columbine mix with exceptionally large 3-inch blooms in shades of blue, pink, maroon, purple, yellow, and white. Plants grow 24-36 inches tall and return year after year, lighting up partially shaded borders in late spring.
Why choose our seeds?
- Extra-large, long-spurred blooms in a wide color range
- Tall 24- to 36-inch plants for the middle of the border
- Returns each year and self-sows gently once established
How to grow McKana Giant Mix Columbine seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost, after stratifying.
- Outdoors: Sow in late fall for natural winter stratification, or in early spring.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining seed-starting mix
- Damp paper towel and a sealed bag for stratification
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- First, cold stratify: place seeds in a damp paper towel inside a sealed bag in the refrigerator for 3-6 weeks.
- Sow just below the surface and cover very lightly with fine mix; press gently.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright, indirect light for seedlings.
- Temperature: 65-70°F (18-21°C) after stratification.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 21-30 days; keep the mix lightly moist the whole time.
- Be patient - columbine is naturally slow and uneven to germinate.
Transplanting
- Move seedlings to individual pots when they can be handled.
- Set plants out after the last frost, spacing 8-12 inches apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun to partial shade; afternoon shade is welcome in hot climates.
- Water: Keep soil evenly moist; plants prefer rich, well-drained soil.
- Fertilizer: A light spring feeding is enough.
- Plants often bloom in their second year; leave some seed heads if you want volunteers.
Bloom Time:
Late spring to early summer, typically from the second year after sowing.
