How to grow Mary Delany Rose seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Stratify seeds in a moist paper towel inside a sealed bag in the refrigerator for 8-12 weeks, then sow indoors.
  • Outdoors: Sow outdoors in autumn in a cold frame for natural chilling.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Paper towel and a zip-top bag for stratification
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • After stratification, sow 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep in seed-starting mix.
  • Keep the mix evenly moist but not soggy.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright, indirect light for germination and young seedlings.
  • Temperature: 65-75°F (18-24°C) after the cold period.

Germination

  • Germination takes several weeks to a few months — be patient.
  • Move seedlings to bright light as soon as they emerge.

Transplanting

  • Pot up seedlings when they have their first true leaves.
  • Harden off before moving outdoors in spring.
  • Space 2-3 feet apart in rich, well-drained soil.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun — at least 6 hours daily.
  • Water: Water deeply; keep soil evenly moist the first year.
  • Fertilizer: Feed regularly during the growing season with rose fertilizer.
  • Mulch to keep roots cool; prune lightly in late winter to shape.

Bloom Time:

Late spring to frost on established plants; seedlings need a year or more of growth before flowering.
