- Classic rosy-purple coneflower blooms with bold orange-brown cones
- Long bloom season through summer and fall
- Sturdy stems for cutting; seed heads add winter interest if left standing
How to grow Magnus Echinacea seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Direct sow in fall for natural chilling, or in spring after the last frost.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Damp paper towel and a sealed bag for cold stratification
- Clear plastic wrap or a humidity dome
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Cold-stratify first: place seeds in a damp paper towel inside a sealed bag in the refrigerator for 2-4 weeks
- Sow on the surface of moist seed-starting mix and press gently — echinacea seeds need light to germinate
- Cover no more than 1/8 inch deep, if at all
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light; seeds need light to germinate
- Temperature: 65-70°F (18-21°C) after stratification
- Humidity: Cover lightly until sprouts appear, then remove the cover
Germination
- Expect germination in 10-20 days
- Plants often focus on roots the first year and bloom more strongly the second season
Transplanting
- Transplant after the last frost when seedlings have a few true leaves
- Harden off over 7-10 days
- Space plants 12-18 inches apart
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun
- Water: Water regularly the first season; established plants tolerate dry spells
- Fertilizer: Light feeding; avoid over-fertilizing
- Deadhead to extend bloom, or leave seed heads for birds and winter interest
Bloom Time:
Summer through fall.
