Madame Clot — also spelled Madame Calot by many growers — is a classic double peony with large, pale rose to cream-white blooms accented with crimson, and a strong fragrance. It flowers in the early peony season on plants for full sun to part shade. Peonies grown from seed take years to bloom, and seedlings will vary from the named parent.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Large, fragrant double blooms in pale rose to cream-white with crimson accents
  • Early-season flowers on a classic, long-lived peony
  • Perennial for USDA zones 3–8

How to grow Madame Clot Peony seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Sow in pots and give a warm, moist period of about 90 days followed by a cold, moist period of about 90 days.
  • Outdoors: Sow outdoors in autumn; seeds germinate after one or two winters.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Pots with well-draining potting mix (if indoors)
  • Plastic bags for the cold, moist period
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Soak seeds for 24 hours, then sow about 1 inch deep.
  • Keep the medium moist through both the warm and cold periods.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Full sun to part shade for the growing plant.
  • Temperature: Warm room temperature first, then refrigerator cold (about 40°F / 4°C) for the cold period.

Germination

  • Germination is slow and irregular — often taking many months and sometimes up to 3 years.
  • Be patient and keep the pot undisturbed; do not discard it too soon.

Transplanting

  • Move seedlings to their permanent spot when large enough to handle.
  • Space plants about 2 feet apart in well-drained soil.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Soil: Deep, fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Plants grown from seed take several years to flower; do not expect blooms the first season.

Bloom Time:

Late spring, in the early peony season (seed-grown plants bloom after several years).
