How to grow Luna White Mallow Hibiscus seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6–12 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Sow directly outdoors after the last frost, once the soil is warm.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Clear dome or plastic wrap to hold humidity
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Soak seeds overnight in room-temperature water to soften the coat.
- Lightly nicking the hard seed coat before soaking can speed germination; sow 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun or strong grow lights once sown.
- Temperature: Around 75°F (24°C).
- Humidity: Cover with a dome or plastic wrap to hold moisture until seedlings appear, then remove it.
Germination
- Seedlings usually emerge in 14–21 days.
- Pot up after 4–5 weeks, taking care not to disturb the taproot.
Transplanting
- Harden off for a week or two, then plant out after all danger of frost.
- Spacing: Space plants 24–36 inches (60–90 cm) apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun; tolerates light afternoon shade in hot regions.
- Water: Keep soil consistently moist — rose mallow loves moisture; mulch helps hold it.
- Fertilizer: A balanced slow-release fertilizer applied twice a year supports flowering.
- Pinch back the tips when plants are 6–8 inches tall for bushier growth and more flowers.
Bloom Time:
Blooms from midsummer into fall; plants started early indoors can flower the first year, otherwise from the second year.
