Lemon Queen Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a branching sunflower with soft, lemon-yellow petals around a dark chocolate-brown center. Plants grow 5-7 feet tall with many flowering side branches, making it a favorite for the back of the border and for long-stemmed summer bouquets.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Soft lemon-yellow petals with a contrasting dark center
  • Branching habit produces many blooms per plant
  • A favorite of bees; spent heads feed birds in fall

How to grow Lemon Queen Sunflower seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Sow in individual pots 2-3 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow after all danger of frost has passed and the soil is warm.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting pots or a prepared sunny bed
  • Well-draining soil of average fertility
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow 1/2-1 inch deep and cover with soil; water well.
  • Sunflowers dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferred.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Full sun.
  • Temperature: 70-80°F (21-27°C) for germination.

Germination

  • Seeds sprout in 7-15 days.
  • Protect young sprouts from slugs and birds.

Transplanting

  • If started indoors, transplant carefully while seedlings are small, after the last frost.
  • Thin or space plants 12-24 inches apart; wider spacing grows larger flowers.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun for the strongest stems and biggest blooms.
  • Water: Water regularly until established; mature plants tolerate drier spells.
  • Fertilizer: Average soil is fine; avoid heavy feeding, which grows leaves at the expense of flowers.
  • Stake tall plants in windy spots; leave the last heads for the birds.

Bloom Time:

Mid-summer to fall, about 85-95 days from sowing.
